Good Idea putting this thread in the language section. I'am sure langauge is a pressing issue in Wales as well as the U.S.A.
No actualy I haven't heard anyone trying to put forth the case for a Spanish medium school. ALthough teachers are supposed to speak at least one other language usualy Spanish in Los Angeles.
Yes some people of Mexican and south American origin were saying that prop 187 back in the 1980's our 1990's that denied access to schools and such to illigals was a rascist attack on Mexican and people who were from South American although most of the people saying this wern't Mexican American citizens the people saying this were Illigals who crossed over to the U.S. Than their was the pro-*test*-('") that just accured were people accussed the U.S of being rascist because citizens wanted the police to enforce boarder laws and were against giving citizenship to illigals until they waited in line like everyone else had too. To this day laws are not being enforced and I think if I'am correct their are millions of illigals living in the U.S. So I would say some feel that they are being discriminated although not because of their accent.
Los Angeles is rich in Cultural societies such as in the Spanish culture that has art and literature in the Los Angeles Museum as well as all over California much fine art work has come from Americans of Mexican descent such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo who were both socialist of the 1940's and 1950's. Madona even has art work from Fridas. As well as the Coit Tower in San Fransico wich holds art work from Frida kahlo.
English should be learned partyly because the rest of the country speaks English and you will have to learn it if you want a good job. Just as I think people in Wales should learn Welsh if they want to make it in Wales. Making English official is another story. Spanish is seen all over the Los Angeles area on billboard advertising everywere and on T.V stations in California. Spanish is good as well because it gives the U.S strength in diversity and opens up the Market place to people who wish to buy U.S goods Communities that speak Spanish help Legal Immigrants from Mexico and South America feel a little more at home and adjust to the U.S.A. Making English official wouldn't be a good thing only because it may lead to unjustice and discrimination. Although people should learn English if they want to make it in the U.S.A.
Yes a very big problem over in the U.S.A as I'am sure in Wales with kids coming from other parts of the U.K to Wales our other parts of the country. In the U.S Usualy parents bring they're families over to the U.S looking for a better way of life our just trying to get away from poverty our crime our just to drop out.Despite all the good intentions set forth by schools to help kids adapt to their environment some kids don't feel they fit in.
Some kids eventualy make it in society although some who feel they don't fit in becuase of language our culture end up in the worst case on drugs our in gangs very dangerous environment for everyone of course. Children are a countries future and if more isn't done to help kids with their new environment we are all going to be in trouble our jails are so full our courts let crimminals out sooner to make room for more serious offenders. I wonder if this isn't also in part to childrens up bringing.
Now I think Wales will have a problem if more isn't done to help children adapt to learning the Welsh language in an environment these kids feel apart of.
Now Does Wales have Out reach programs to help kids adapt in Wales to learning Welsh in a friendly environment. The U.S has out reach programs to help kids face reality in a friendly but strict environment wich helps them learn English and lets them participate in programes to help make friends. It focuses on letting kids learn and use the English language in everyday life. These out reach centers are usualy located in area's were English is not the language of choice.
Is their out reach programes in area's in Wales were Welsh isn't the language of choice were kids can learn Welsh in a friendly but strict environment?
Hello Dai
Now that I look at that it "Friendly but strict environment" kind of sounds like a correctional facility for troubled kids  a place were young offenders of the law go.
That came out wrong.
Their is a place in a city Called El Monte that has an out reach program were kids go our are sent in some casses were they hopefully become model citizens if they are haveing trouble adapting to they're environment.
I went to the Boy Scouts.
Now that you mention it Dai I Noticed that in Wales their was Welsh over the loud speaker at Cardiff train station and I was thrilled to hear this. As well as people speaking Welsh to each other on the train ride over from London to Cardiff station. You can realy get cought up in the Welsh Spirit. So I agree Wales has a flourishing Industry in people trying to get in touch with their roots as well as learning Welsh. I'am also looking into my roots.
I think alot of Americans as well are trying to get in touch with their roots I've been seeing Welsh bumper stickers in Los Angeles were before I never saw one. Even Rachael Ray shows you how to make RITZ Welsh Rarebit on the back of the Ritz cracker box at my house.
Click on Recipes than click on Ritz clubs Welsh Rarebit should be to the left of the menu.
